Arsenal have begun pressing ahead with their summer transfer plans recently as Arsenal terminated two long-term contracts, but may be unable to get Brazilian striker Willian off the club’s books.

Young couple Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lukonga have already completed a move to the UAE in this window, while chiefs Edo and Mikel Arteta have been linked with potential deals for the likes of Tammy Abraham, James Madison, Robin Nevis and Aaron Ramsdale.
But Willian, once touted as an important signing last summer, has barely made himself feel welcome at Arsenal after what was a rather poor first season following his move from Premier League rivals Chelsea. After scoring just once in the league in 2020-21 and outsmarting emerging young talents Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka, Willian’s massive salary package can no longer be kept on the club’s books.
The situation this summer has always been that both parties are seemingly happy to separate, with the Brazil international being linked with potential moves for Inter Miami, with transfer coach Fabrizio Romano claiming Willian was 100% guaranteed to leave.
With his hefty salary, the problem of garnering enough interest to be able to change player this summer has arisen, especially against the backdrop of such an ineffective season in the Emirates. Besides the fact that the Ribeirão Pires national is thirty-three years old after the start of the 2021-22 Premier League season where the likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Bukayo Saka, Nicolas Pépé and Gabriel Martinelli are all expected to play once. Other big first-team roles, Arsenal’s need to keep him off the books is paramount.
Being saddled with another bloated contract that is allowed to deteriorate and later leave for free would be another example of the club not learning from past mistakes, and if Edu and Arteta intend to bring in another attacking player this summer it is certain that Willian should move out of the building immediately.
